A Crafty Soiree #57

I am excited to share with all of you that last week was our biggest Crafty Soiree yet!!!  It's so exciting to check back throughout the day and then the week and see the number of projects increase.  Thank you so much for joining us, I hope you know how much we really appreciate you sharing your talents on our linky party.  This week I'd like to feature the two projects that were the most popular with visitors along with one picked out by me.
I can see why Beverly's Bright and Cheery Ruffled Curtains was our most visited link.  Heather Bailey fabric and a fresh color palette mean that even grey skies will look pretty through them.
Kara at Mine for the Making has been putting together Busy Bags, like this alphabet match up.  I made a number of these types of activities for my daughter awhile ago and they are so worth the assembly time.  It's great always having something quick and little to entertain your child with.  I love the bright colorful bags Kara picked to store hers in.  She's got several easy to do ideas to share so be sure to check out the post!
For my pick, I chose this Halloween frame that little kids can make and help add to your home's decor.  One Artsy Mama shares her tips for putting one together.

Next month a "Disney On Ice presents Mickey and Minnie's Magical Journey" will be coming to the Detroit Metro area, with performances on October 12-16 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.  As usual I've got the hook up on a great deal for all my local readers!

Here's a description of the show:
Make imagination your destination!  Join Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse on a journey into the magicl worlds of Disney's The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Peter Pan, and Lilo & Stitch.  Discover Ariel and Sebastian's enchanting undersea kingdom; visit the Pride Lands with Simba and Nala; soar through starry skies with Peter Pan and his sassy fairy friend Tinker Bell; and say "aloha" to fun with Lilo and Stitch.  You'll be captivated by the music, beauty, and laughter in a journey so magical, you'll never want to go home.
I know "Disney On Ice presents Mickey and Minnie's Magical Journey" will be a big hit with the whole family.  I love the variety of characters being featured and am especially looking forward to seeing Peter Pan, I don't think he's been in any of the shows we've seen so far.  It's always an amazing performance and I can't believe the ticket deal I have to share.

Conquer the Kairu and Become a Redakai! An Exciting New Trading Card Game

Card games are extremely popular with the neighborhood kids.  Even my five year old enjoys collecting cards for the various games, even though she has no idea how to actually play them, mainly because she can't yet read the cards.  I recently got to check out Redakai, an exciting new trading card game with amazing Blast3D technology.  Redakai combines the fun and excitement of a tournament style card game with 3D and animation effects.

Until you see the cards in action, you won't believe how cool the animation looks as you move the cards. Through the stacking of the cards, the overlays change the health and appearance of the player.  Through this, the game actually tracks your progress and players get to see the damaging effects of their attacks. It is also accessible to younger players because one style of play is less reliant on reading.  Learn more about how to play the game by viewing the video below.

My husband was and is still all about role playing games and Redakai has great potential for Dads like Brad to play with their kids and continue to be involved in RPG (Role Playing Games). I really like how the game can be simple or as you get better, more advanced so it stays interesting for a range of ages and skill levels.  Lke many RPG it also has a community of fans players can interact with both online and at events.
We were sent a starter pack (suggested retail value $12.99) that comes with two power packs and a portable battlefield designed to look like the X-Reader seen in the show.  Players can take their X-Drives into battle.  We had our 8 year old neighbor check it out for us.  He was very excited by the package, as he looked at it.  He continued to be captivated by the graphics on the cards and how they combined into new images.  His mom reported he continued to look at them all night long and loves them.
More cards are available in Power Packs of 11 cards, suggested retail $5.99, an inexpensive way to expand your play.  One of the coolest accessories for the games is this deluxe figure (suggested retail value $19.99).  When cards are inserted into the figure, unique animations hidden in every Attack X-Drive are unlocked, players can see the attack come to life.

The game is targeted to kids aged 6-11, with products ranging from $5.99 to $29.99.  Fans can see Redakai brought to life through the annimated series, now on Cartoon Network.  Learn more at Redakai.com.

The Tuneables DVD and Music Box CD Review: A New Music Series for Kids

One of the first Mommy and Me activities I did with ER was weekly music classes.  It was fun half hour spent together learning songs, tapping to the beat, and rhythm.  We were both sad when we completed the series of classes for our program.  We had to go out each week, sometimes on Michigan's icy roads to get there, but now it's possible for your kids to learn music fundamentals at home.  I was especially interested in The Tuneables because I'm always up for looking into ways to get kids actively engaged with music, instead of just passively listening along.

Through the new DVD/CD collection, The Tuneables, your kids will be taken to the colorful magical world of Tuneville, where they'll meet some special characters.  Each one is based on a musical instrument and with their new friends, viewers are encouraged to hear and sing tonal patterns, develop rhythmic skills, stretch singing skills, and be engaged with classical music.  Kids are encouraged to "hear it, do it, and name it," leading to greater understanding and mastery.
My daughter loves dancing, music, and singing and really loves The Tuneables: I Love Music.  She even commented the first time we watched it, that it's like being back in music class.  It was nice that the characters encouraged viewers to do things like pat your knees, march, and sway to the beat of music to keep their body moving.  Another aspect I enjoyed was how you also work on voice control by singing softly and matching the song's pitch.  More DVD/CDs are expected to be added to this series and will build on the skills taught in this one.  I like the idea of having a series of music lessons you can do in your home over and over, whenever it's convenient for you.

Included with the DVD is a CD, The Music Box, designed to support the curriculum in The Tuneables, it's also a stand alone music experience.  There are 19 songs on it that encourage kids to move to the beat, hear and sing tonal patterns, improve overall singing ability, and expose them to classical music, all of which reinforce the concepts from the DVD.  The combined DVD and CD package is geared toward ages 3-8 and retails for $29.99.  I believe it is a fair price, since each music class we went to broke down to being $18 a class and you get a CD too.  Like most young children, my daughter likes repetition and replaying the video is both enjoyable and helps her practice new skills.  The Tuneables is one fun new series that will teach both you and your children new musical skills.

You can learn more about the program's sponsor the Music Intelligence Project and follow The Tuneables on Facebook.  To view sample videos and hear music view their YouTube channel.  Here is one of ER's favorite songs from the video:

Giveaway: Shutterfly Photo Books - 5 Winners!

This giveaway is now closed, thank you to everyone who entered!  Your participation helps me get more great opportunities for all my readers.  Congratulations to...Keri #21, crftyduchess #16. Annette W. #10, Joy N. #41, and Wendy #3.
It's no secret that I love Shutterfly!  Recently they made some exciting changes to their photo books and added some great features and cool new backgrounds and styles.  I have more control over design features than ever before, now I can adjust photo size, text placement, and add embellishments.  Meaning each photo book is truly one of a kind!

Here's one of my most recent, using one of their new styles Everyday White.  I created it after our trip to Philadelphia last May, and we love looking at it together. I also sent a version to our hosts my sister-in-law and brother-in-law, it was easy to make some adjustments and make it perfect for them.

The new interface takes a little getting used to but is definitely worth the time to learn it.  There are nice tools, that help you line up elements on a page, so the results are very professional.  I had so many photo books from Shutterfly that I was getting a little tired of the set layouts and backgrounds.  I am so glad they've expanded their selections, because while I love making digital scrapbook pages to print in a book, it's a lot quicker to use the designs available.
Shutterfly has also made improvements to their cards, which we use most often to say thank you for presents from long distance relatives.  Now you can add your photos to the front, inside, and even the back too.  Many of the new Christmas card designs off this option and more, like the ability to change the greeting.  I love how they offer so many style options from classic and timeless to playful and trendy.  We have ordered our Christmas cards from them, the past several years and always been very happy with them.  There are also several different categories of invitations available through Shutterfly.  When I was expecting, I really enjoyed perusing all the cute baby shower invitations

Happy Hapa Makes Us Very Happy - Mermaid Towel & Barbie Dresses

My friend Sharon makes the coolest mermaid tail towels made out of soft terry cloth.  The ties and bias tape are handmade using coordinating batik fabric. The ties are long enough to tie around the front or the back.  Ever since I first saw them on Sharon's blog, I just knew that ER would love one, and ordered a special one in the Cinderella shade of blue that's her favorite color.

She looks so cute with it on!  All summer long I planned on taking a picture of our little mermaid enjoying it at one of our Great Lakes but due to being pregnant and then because I'd had a C-section we didn't spend nearly as much time as I'd have liked at the beach.  So you'll have to get a look at it, in our bathroom, where the shower curtain goes well with it, don't you think?
I thought that since our time at the beach and pool is coming to an end, man has it been cold in Michigan, that the mermaid towel would be getting put away until next year but ER's found new uses for it.  She loves playing dress up in it, I guess she finds it to be a much more girly version of a dress up cape!  I'm glad, because it's just too cute to put away!
Here's a close up of the fabulous batik fabric from Sharon, it's just gorgeous!  ER is not the only one in the house dressed up in her Happy Hapa finery.  At the same time I ordered the mermaid towel, I also got her a polk dot and mermaid dress for her Barbie dolls.  The girls look very fashionable and ER loves the dresses because they are so easy for her to get on and off by herself.
Check out my friend Sharon at Happy Hapa. We love her creations like my camera strap and I've got my eye on a hooded towel, like this one, for my next purchase.

MAM Baby Product Review

It's been five years since the last time we had a baby in the house and there's been a lot of changes in baby products since then.  Oral baby care products are ones you can't pass on and we'd been concerned about the bottles we'd had previously.  So we were starting all over and with so many choices, deciding on types of pacifiers and bottles can be overwhelming.  I was so excited to get a chance to try a selection of baby care products from MAM, a trusted brand for over 25 years.
Our last child wouldn't take a pacifier, and I used to be so envious of other parents at the store as they'd push their baby quietly sucking theirs by in a cart.  My baby was usually crying at the top of her lungs and they'd give my sympathetic glances as they went.  I was really hoping LB would take one and he loves his MAM Perfect pacifier.  I could not be happier!

One concern I had with pacifiers five years ago, and the reason we didn't try too hard to get ER to use on before, was jaw and tooth development being affected.  I don't have to worry about that with MAM pacifiers because the anatomically correct nipple design lets LB calm himself with sucking while maintaining proper alignment.  The nipple will adapt to his mouth so it's always in the right position and I can also have size choices so that it's the most comfortable fit for his mouth as he grows.  I also like that the design won't block airways and that there isn't too much surface to rub against his sensitive skin.

LB is using his MAM Perfect in the picture above, along with one of my favorite products we received for this review.  The MAM Twist Clip is great because a pacifier only helps if you can get it to stay in baby's mouth and that was a major problem the first few times we tried a pacifier with LB.  It's really easy to use, just snap the pacifier into the transparent ring.  You turn the wheel to the left to open the clip and turn it to the right to close.  We haven't had any issues with the pacifier getting droped on the floor since we started using it with the clip.

We also got a MAM clip & Nipple Cover, which is great for when you are heading out and need to throw a pacifier and clip into the diaper bag.  The clip can be attached with one hand and there's a nipple cover incorporated into the design, so I don't have to stop to grab a baggy to put it all in before packing in my bag.  I love having one less thing to worry about while trying to get out the door, see a picture of it here.

Besides the MAM Perfect, we also got a set of MAM Night pacifiers. It's a little early to use them because their nipple is designed for 6+ months, but I think they'll be quite handy as they glow in the dark.  It shoud be easy to find one in his crib when we go in for feedings and to check on LB during the night.  This set also comes packaged in a great reusable box that can be sterilized and used to carry up to two soothers.  I am definitely planning to continue using MAM pacifiers and accessories, purchasing more as needed.

Most of the time I don't use bottles, as we're breastfeeding.  However, some places are just not conducive to it, like when we were at the local fair all afternoon.  It was crowded and hot outside, with no where remotely private or good to sit down.  There's also times when a family member wants to feed LB.

I've got a great breast pump, but needed some new bottles.  We got an 8oz. anti-colic bottle to use.  First impressions, it's really cute!  To be honest one bottle to the next really seems pretty much the same to me. I rely on reading the information from each manufacter to learn more about its features.  All I know is that when I gave LB some pumped milk in the anti-coli bottle, he sucked it all down and then took a long nap.  In my book, that makes it a winner!

Here is what MAM has to say about their bottles:

Its vented base has small air holes and a silicone seal that allows for maximum air flow in while still preventing milk from leaking out. The vented base ensures controlled milk flow by balancing air pressure inside the bottle. Liquid is also pushed towards the nipple allowing it to retain its shape and preventing it from collapsing. All Anti-Colic bottles use MAM’s patented ultra soft silicone™ nipple. Transitioning from breast to bottle is simple because MAM ultra soft silicone™ nipples feel most like mom's breast.

All MAM bottles and training cups are CPSIA compliant and completely Baby Safe; BPA-free, Lead-free, PVC-free and Phthalate-free.  Here is a short video that'll tell you more about the bottles features, including the different layers that can be taken apart and how to reassemble for self-sterilization in the microwave. It's pretty neat and one of the biggest draws for me to continue using these bottles.

The last product I'll be including in this review is the Oral Care Rabbit and it helps me with an area I'll admit to being somewhat lax with our first baby.  You use it clean your baby's mouth, first by massaging his gums and then teeth to remove bacteria and get him used to a regular oral care routine.  .

With ER I would use a wash cloth from time to time, but have to admit this is a lot easier to use.  For one, the shape is much better designed for getting into little mouths.  You slip your fingers into the bunny ears so you fingers are a little bit more protected for when he bites down on them. There is also less excess fabric inside his mouth as I try to move around to clean.    The Oral Care Rabbit is easy to clean in the machine or with warm water and can be sterilized so you can use it for a long time.

We really enjoyed learning about and trying out MAM products!  We also received some teething products from MAM and will let you know what we think of those, when it's appropriate for LB to begin using them.  Find out more about MAM and their products on their website, Facebook page, and by following their tweet on Twitter.

Giveaway: Gold Medal White Whole Wheat Flour Pack

This giveaway is now closed, thank you to everyone who entered and congratulations to debijackson, comment #22 and who said, "cinnamon rolls"

This month Gold Medal White Whole Wheat flour will be showing up at grocery stores.  Using it in your recipes is a simple way to add more whole grains to your diet.  Unlike most whole wheat flours that are made from hard red spring wheat, Gold Medal White Whole Wheat flour is made with hard white spring wheat. So, it´s whole grain, but with a similar taste and texture to all-purpose white flour.

That means it's perfect for family favorite recipes like breads, pizza dough, cookies, muffins and brownies.  Gold Medal White Whole Wheat flour bakes up golden and has a milder flavor than baked goods made with regular whole wheat flour.  All you have to do is substitute whole wheat white flour for 25 to 50 percent of the recipe´s flour content.  It's easy to add more whole grains to your family's diet, without sacrificing flavor!

Find out more about  Gold Medal White Whole Wheat flour on their website and Facebook page.
I hope you'll all try out Gold Medal White Whole Wheat flour, and I've got a prize package for one of you, to help make adding whole grains to your diet even easier!  Included in the prize pack are:
