Water Painting, the Cheapest Art Ever

Lately we've been painting with water nearly every day. It's one of the most inexpensive art experiences ever and so easy. ER's been happily transforming our driveway into her largest canvas ever. As you can see, it's also very fun to add some sidewalk chalk to the mix and get a watercolor effect.
Right now she mainly paints big water splotches to the untrained eye, but in her mind she's drawn two puppies, a princess, and Papa. She doesn't even seem to mind that her masterpiece magically disappears each day.

My kindergarten students were equally enamored with this activity. We used to let kids practice "writing" their letters, numbers, and later in the year even sight words, by water painting them. Since they didn't know them in the first place and had to refer to flash cards, it was a fun way for them to see, hear, say, and make them. Kids who resisted pencil and paper responded especially well; I even had parents tell me they continued to practice spelling words in first grade using this technique.
