Photo courtesty of NBC's official Pagent Page, Contestant Bio.
We just finished watching the Miss USA pageant, and were thrilled to see the contestant from our home state, Miss Michigan win! We were especially interested to see this year's show because one of Brad's co-workers was at the it, cheering on Rima Fakih, who is a member of Brad's coworker's family. I bet that is one group that will be celebrating into the wee hours in Las Vegas tonight!
Now, I don't know for certain the ethnic background of Ms. Fakih, but I have a good idea, based on what we know about Brad's co-worker's family. I have to say, as someone who grew up watching the big pageants on television and who is of a minority background, it was thrilling to see a Ms. Fakih win.
I was impressed with her poise and ability to recover from an onstage slip gracefully. I felt she answered the interview question intelligently, and in a way that agrees with my own point of view. I also loved how one of the first things she said when asked how she was feeling, after winning was, "Ask me after I have a pizza!" You go girl, show 'em some personality!
PS: In case you're wondering, yes, I did think the controversial Waking Up in Vegas photo shoot was a bit much and not appropriate for young children to see or the time slot for which the pageant aired. However, I also know that part of being an independent, intelligent, and modern woman is being able to make decisions for yourself.
All of the contestants are mature grown women capable of making the choice to participate in such an opportunity and I am sure each one was confident enough to only take the photos and poses she felt comforable with. It would not something I am comfortable with, but then again I also wouldn't be prancing around in a bikini and in heels...anywhere, EVER.
